Kobunsha is a gallery café in a renovated townhouse from the mid-Meiji period on the west side of the Kyoto Imperial Palace. We serve Matcha, Sencha(Japanese green tea, Houjicha(Roasted Japanese green tea), coffee and homemade juices, as well as Japanese sweets and toast.

Menu is available here.

Matcha and Sencha are made by Hoshino Tea Farm, Houjicha by Ryuo-en, coffee beans are roasted in-house by Café de Corazon, and homemade juices are made using pesticide-free ingredients. Japanese seasonal confectionery is often custom-made to suit special exhibitions at Kanaya Masahiro, a Kyoto-based confectioner, but please ask at the café for details.

Many neighbours, students, tourists and people with babies visit Kobunsha. It is like a salon in the town, so please spend as much time as you like chatting or reading. Whether you want to make small talk or find out about the neighbourhood, please feel free to talk to us. We would be happy to spend a peaceful moment with you.

Please park bicycles and mopeds in the alley. Baby prams can be left in front of the entrance. The shop is located at the end of an alley and may seem difficult to enter, but it is an easy-going cafe, so please come in.

If you are visiting with children, you do not need to order for them. Feel free to bring milk and baby food, change nappies and breastfeed your child. Please call in advance to enquire about availability so that you can secure a seat.

*Chairs are available for those who do not like to be seated on tatami mats.
